To emigrate in an EU/EFTA State

Switzerland has signed an agreement on the freedom of movement of persons with the Member States of the European Union and with the EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway). The agreement on the freedom of movement of persons seeks to facilitate geographical and professional mobility of Swiss citizens within the EU and EFTA member countries. This agreement stipulates, in particular, that Swiss citizens shall enjoy, within the European area, living, employment and working conditions identical to those accorded to the citizens of the EU/EFTA states. The agreement on the freedom of movement of persons will make it easier in future for Swiss persons to settle in the Member States of the European Union. These agreements therefore make substantial changes in respect of admission, residence and establishment in the EU/EFTA countries. They also introduce changes in the area of social insurance and mutual recognition of diplomas.

The brochures entitled "Swiss citizens in the EU", "Living and working in the EU" and "Swiss diplomas in the EU" set out the principal information on emigration to an EU/EFTA Member State.

The specific social insurance rules flowing from the agreement on the freedom of movement of persons are dealt with in the heading on social insurance in the chapter entitled "Living Abroad".
